Description: The Spilanthes acmella or Spilanthes oleracea commonly known as Pellitary is a flowering herb and belongs to the plant family of Asteraceae. Due to it medicinal values to heal toothache it is also known as toothache plant or paracress as the leaves and flower heads contain an analgesic agent spilanthol used to numb toothache. The Pellitary is native to the tropics of Brazil, and is grown as an ornamental and a medicinal plant in various parts of the world. It is s small, erect plant that grows quickly and sends up gold and red flower inflorescences. It is very frost sensitive but perennial in the warmer climates. It is used for culinary purposes and a small amounts of shredded fresh leaves add a unique flavour to the salad. Cooked leaves may lose their strong flavour but may be used as leafy greens. It is used both as fresh and cooked leaves in dishes in parts of Brazil. To give a spicy flavour Pellitary is often combined with chillies and garlic that helps add vitamins to other foods. A related species is used in several Southeast Asian dishes. Consumption of portions or whole flowers has been reportedly used to offset the intense heat of chillies and peppers. A decoction or infusion of the leaves and flowers of Pellitary is recommended for stammering, toothache, stomatitis and throat complaints. When eating a whole flower bud be careful as it may results in an extremely strong tingling sensation and this is accompanied by excessive saliva production.
