What is Primary Amenorrhea?

Also called: BE, AmE, Amenorrhea

A woman's monthly bleeding is known as menstruation or period. Every month, the women’s body prepares for pregnancy. Every 28 days in the absence of pregnancy the uterus sheds its lining. The menstrual blood which is produced during the menstrual period is partly blood and partly tissue from inner layer of the uterus or womb. It passes out of the women’s body through the vagina. Menstrual periods starts around age of 12 and continues till the age of 45 when the women is said to have achieved menopause. The menstrual periods lasts for three to five days.

Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation — can happen during puberty or later in life. Primary amenorrhea describes a condition in which you haven't had any menstrual periods by age 16. Secondary amenorrhea occurs when you were previously menstruating, but then stopped having periods. Pregnancy may be your first thought if you miss a period, but there are many possible explanations for absence of menstruation.

A sign, not a disease, amenorrhea seldom results from a serious condition. However, not knowing why menstruation has stopped can be stressful, and waiting for it to recur may feel like a lifetime.

Amenorrhea is also known as BE and AmE.
