What is Prostatic Enlargement?

Also called: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, BPH, Prostate Enlargement

The prostrate gland is an associate organ of the reproductive system. The secretions of the prostrate gland are mixed with the sperms and are released by ejaculation during coitus. Prostatic Enlargement better known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH is a common problem experienced by males above the age of 60. The prostrate gland goes through the phase of growth and maturation all through the life of an individual. The first phase of growth occurs during puberty followed by another period of growth around the age of 25. It is the last phase of growth above the age of 40 which precipitates the condition of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is characterized by Prostatic enlargement. BPH rarely causes any problems before the age of 40. As the Prostatic enlargement starts, the tissues surrounding the organ prevents it from expanding causing the organ to start pressing on the urethra. This leads the bladder to contract even when it is not fully filled. Eventually the bladder loses its tone and is unable to expel the urine. All the complications associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia are linked to this condition. Prostrate enlargement associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can be treated by medicines if the condition is not severe. In chronic prostatic enlargement surgery is the only alternative option. 10% of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can lead to prostrate cancer.
