Name: Radix Gentianae

Description: Radix Gentianae is the dried root of Gentiana lutea. The root contains bitter secoiridioid glycosides such amargogentin and amaroswerin. These compounds are extremely bitter. The toxicity of Radix gentiana is low. Bitter in flavour, cold in nature, it acts on the liver, gallbladder and bladder channels. The herb has the effects of clearing hert and dampness, purging fire downward. So it is good at clearing the damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder and in the lower-jiao. It also purges the excessive and stagnated fire. The herb is indicated for jaundice due to damp-heat, downward flow of damp-heat, conjunctival congestion caused by liver fire and the occurrence of wind syndrome in case of extreme heat.
