Red clover is also known by some of the common names such as cow clover, meadow clover, wild clover, purple clover, beebread, Cow grass, coast clover and trefoil. The Latin or Scientific or medical name name is Trifolium pratense. Red clover is a perennial plant that grows wild in the Americas, Europe, Australia, Asia, and northern Africa. It is widely grown as a fodder crop, valued for its nitrogen fixation which increases soil fertility. The flower head, which ranges from pink to purple or red, is the part of the plant used in herbal remedies. Historically, red clover has been used for cancer and respiratory problems, such as whooping cough, asthma, and bronchitis. Current uses of red clover are for menopausal symptoms, breast pain associated with menstrual cycles, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, and symptoms of prostate enlargement. Red clover seems to be safe for most adults when used for short periods of time. No serious adverse effects have been reported.
The isoflavones and phytoestrogens from Red Clover have been used to treat the symptoms of menopause. Women who are pregnant and breastfeeding should avoid ingesting Red Clover. It has also been reported that red clover can be used for therapeutic purposes for coughs, bronchitis, eczema, sores, scrofula and can be gargled for mouth ulcers and sore throats.
