What is Rheumatic Fever?

Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can develop as a rare complication after an infection with Streptococcus bacteria (such as strep throat or scarlet fever). The disease can affect the heart, joints, skin, and brain. There's no cure for Rheumatic Fever. But it can be prevented by prompt and complete treatment of a strep throat infection with antibiotics. Permanent heart damage resulting from Rheumatic Fever is called rheumatic heart disease. Rheumatic Fever commonly damages the heart valves (rheumatic carditis) and can interfere with normal blood flow through the heart.
