Name: Santa Maria

Other Names: teitai, Feta'u, Bintangor tree, Poon tree, Guanandi, Jacareuba, Calophyllum, Alexandrian Laurel

Description: Santa Maria is a large tree up to 25cm in height, with four-angled stems, deeply furrowed and cracked bark, and sticky, yellow sap. The simple, oppositely arranged leaves havea finely veined, elliptic to ovate blade 10-25cm long. The flowers, arranged in short racemes are 15-30mm across and have four white petals, four similar white sepals, and numerous yellow stamens. The fruit of Santa Maria is globose or ovoid mostly 3-4cm across, green at maturity and containing a single oily seed enclosed within a hard, bony shell. The common names of Santa Maria, as well as commercial names, for these trees are:

* teitai (in Kiribati)
* Feta'u (in Tonga)
* Bintangor tree (in Malaysia) and
* Poon tree (in India),
* Guanandi, Jacareuba or Santa Maria (in Latin America).
