Description: The stomach is the first organ in the digestive system. It is a J shaped hollow muscular organ and it is primarily concerned with the changing of the food into a semisolid form. The walls of stomach release gastric juice which contains a fair amount of HCl. The mucous layer of the stomach protects the lining of the stomach from the corrosive action of HCl. Stomach Cancer or Gastric Cancer mostly affects the geriatric patients though incidence of Gastric Cancer are increasing in the younger generation due to faulty life styles and eating habits. The common causative factors of Stomach Cancer are "Helicobacter pylori infection, have had stomach inflammation, salted, smoked, or pickled foods, smoking, or have a family history of stomach cancer". It is hard to effectively diagnose Stomach Cancer in its early states. Indigestion and stomach discomfort can be symptoms of early cancer, but other problems can cause the same symptoms. In advanced cases, there may be blood in your stool, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, jaundice or trouble swallowing. Because it is often found late, it can be hard to treat Stomach Cancer. Treatment options include "surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination". Free radicals have been indicted as the primary cause of various malignancies. The content of flavonoids in Saposhnikovia divaricata root extracts was significant. The antioxidant activity of Saposhnikovia divaricata root extracts was almost two times higher than other commonly used antioxidants like Selenium and vitamin E. Ingredients present in Saposhnikovia divaricata root extracts showed long lasting radical scavenging activity and the EPR spectra were recorded in time to follow the reaction kinetics. Saposhnikovia polysaccharides had some functions of scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and scavenging effects on DPPH and OH were especially significant. A-SPS had better effect among different Saposhnikovia polysaccharides, and the scavenging rate of DPPH* and OH* could approach to 70% when the experimental concentration was 8 mg/ml Saposhnikovia divaricata root extracts can be used with confidence to treat Stomach Cancer along with other conventional treatments with chemotherapeutic agents.
