Description: Cistus is also known as the Sun Rose. It is a flowering plant of the rockrose family Cistaceae genre. This perennial shrubs holds almost 20species. It is native to Mediterranean region and found on dry or rocky soils throughout this area, from Morocco and Portugal through the Middle East, including the Canary Islands. As for the leaves they are evergreen and usually slightly rough surfaced. Their size may vary from 2-8 cm in length. In a few species of Sun Rose, the leaves are seen to be coated with a highly aromatic resin called Labdanum. These flowers have 5 showy petals. The color of these flowers can range from white to purple and dark pink. A few species of the flower have a conspicuous dark red spot at the base of each petal. The Sun Rose is a garden flower together with its many hybrids and cultivars. It is being studies for the medicinal properties and numerous research groups have a special extract of the rockrose. This extract study showed that the propagation of the flu viruses (influenza) significantly inhibits in vitro without resistance. This research is seen as a possible new treatment for the flu virus, including bird flu.
