Swollen gums or Gingival swelling is a common oro-dental disease which is caused by bad dental hygiene. Swollen Ggums involves swelling in the gums between the teeth, known as papillae. Some times, the gums swell enormously, blocking the teeth completely. Gingival swelling is a non-inflammatory enlargement of the gingival tissues produced by factors other than local irritation. It is characteristically due to an increase in the number of cells. Causes of Gingival swelling include "Gingivitis, Infection by a virus or fungus, Malnutrition Poorly fitting dentures, Pregnancy, Sensitivity to toothpaste or mouthwash, Scurvy, or side effect of a drug such as Dilantin or Phenobarbital".
