Name: Vitamin D

Other Names: rachitamin, rachitasterol, antirachitic factor, sunshine vitamin

Description: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorbs calcium. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body's fatty tissue. Vitamin D is also known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the body manufactures the vitamin after being exposed to sunshine. Other names include: rachitamin, rachitasterol and antirachitic factor. Vitamin D help prevent a growing list of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, osteoporisis, breast cancer, colon cancer, and ovarian cancer . Vitamin D helps keep your bones and teeth strong and healthy. Vitamin D regulates the growth and activity of your cells. Vitamin D reduces inflammation. Kids need twice the usually recommended amount of vitamin D because of evidence suggesting that it may help prevent serious diseases. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis in adults or rickets in children. One should eat food that are rich in Vitamin D such as Dairy products cheese, butter, cream, fortified milk, fish, oysters, fortified cereals, margarine. Too much vitamin D can make the intestines absorb too much calcium. This may cause high levels of calcium in the blood. High blood calcium can lead to calcium deposits in soft tissues such as the heart and lungs. This can reduce their ability to function. Kidney stones, vomiting, and muscle weakness may also occur if you have too much vitamin D.
