Description: The pharmaceutical name of Zhi Mu is Rhizoma Anemarrhenae Asphodeloidis and the botanical name is Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bge.(Liliaceae) is bitter, cold and sweet. Other names are Zhi Mu Rou and Fei Zhi Mu. Zi Mu is prepared by harvesting the whole plant in summer or autumn. The rhizomes are removed from fibrous root and soil, cleaned and dried in the sun. They are soaked in water, peeled, and cut into slices. The rhizomes can also be processed with wine or salt-water. Zhi Mu is generally used in Chinese herbal medicines. It helps to treat yinxu (yin deficient) with afternoon fever and night sweating, constipation; toothache due to heat in stomach, diabetes with heat syndrome, edema, cough due to heat in the lung, constipation, and difficulty in urination. Medicinal properties are that it helps in lowering blood sugar. It is antipyretic, sedative and a potent antibiotic.
